About

My name's Ryan (Holla @ Me!) and I want to play a metal guitar solo so ripping that it opens up a rift in the fabric of the universe and that Cthulhu-thing from Hellboy crawls out.

Also, this is the place where I post stupid shit that doesn't matter.

DORKY POST ALERT
Gizmodo is reporting that Apple is about to launch a shit-ton of cloud based services, including wireless music streaming and wireless itunes syncing and all sorts of shenanigans.
I can vouch for this - at a conference I was at, I asked an apple engineer who shall remain nameless about OTA syncing and he started to talk before cutting himself off and simply stated - “I’ll get myself in trouble for talking about it, but rest assured there are plans in store that would blow your mind”
Stereotypical apple hyperbole not withstanding, it seems to confirm that some sort of cloud-based-shenanigans are certainly afoot.

Oh man, I can’t wait to start using the cloud… oh wait, I use an android phone… so I have been. This whole time. Awesome.
Not, but for realz, OTA iTunes would probably change my life.

When shown pornographic videos, men have an undeniable response either to gay or straight images but not both, according to sensitive gauges attached to their genitals—it’s that binary. Female sexual response is more democratic, opaque, and unpredictable: Arousal itself is harder to track, and there is evidence that it defies easy categorization. “I don’t yet understand female partner choices very well, and neither does anyone else,” Bailey wrote me in an e-mail. “What I do think it’s time to do is admit that female sexuality looks in some ways very different from male sexuality, and that there is no clear analog in women of men’s directed sexual-arousal pattern, which I think is their sexual orientation. I am not sure that women don’t have a sexual orientation, but it is certainly unclear that they do.
— NY Mag’s “The Science Of Gaydar”. I know that’s long, but holy shit, if you have like 20 minutes, read this article and really sit and think for a while because it’s really God damn interesting.

One, remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Two, never give up work. Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it. Three, if you are lucky enough to find love, remember it is there and don’t throw it away.

The world’s first SFW pussy-cam!
“They designed a special camera housing from a stainless steel electrical box. To prevent zinc contamination from the steel, the box was coated with a special marine-grade powder coating. The bolts that hold the box together are made of non-toxic nylon, with all the edges filed off so the octopus can’t unscrew them. The box is also strong enough to withstand the crushing strength of the octopus tentacles in case he decides to give it a good squeeze.”

Bizarre (or not so bizarre) link discovered between low IQ and suicide rates
“Out of a cohort of 1.1 million men with IQ measured in early adulthood, almost 18,000 had been admitted to hospital at least once for attempted suicide. Even after adjusting for factors such as age and socioeconomic status, the researchers found that men with lower IQ scores were increasingly likely to have attempted suicide at least once. By far the most common method used was poisoning, for example taking an overdose of medication.”
So I guess that really does affirm that the song “Jumper” was written for complete fucking morons, huh?

Wowza.

American cage fighter ‘rips out still-beating heart of training partner after fearing he was possessed by the devil’

As someone who has had a bit of fun with the affects of magic mushrooms (sorry future employers…) I can’t imagine anything I’d rather do less than tear a man’s still beating heart out of his chest and bathe in his blood.

You know what I did on magic mushrooms once?

Wrote poetry about Walmart in a “Hello Kitty” notebook and then talked to a statue about Star Wars. I don’t wanna say this dude probably had a lot of like emotional problems to begin with… but I’m going to say this dude had a lot of emotional problems to begin with.

Oh, actually, I did hallucinate about the devil once, but it was at a party and I was dancing to techno and I kept hearing a voice (one I just assumed? was the Devil’s) telling me to dance faster and sexier than everyone else so they knew how sweet my moves were.

Coffee has no affect on alertness in drinkers… I’m mildly pissed about this
“The medium/high caffeine consumers who received the placebo reported a decrease in alertness and an increase in headache, neither of which were reported by those who received caffeine. However, their post-caffeine levels of alertness were no higher than the non/low consumers who received a placebo, suggesting caffeine only brings coffee drinkers back up to ‘normal’.”
A study shows that caffeine might not have any actually stimulatory effect on drinkers, other than it’s mildly (hallucinogenic oddly enough) buzz. Ruh-roh.

“gpoyw: it’s my 16th birthday and this (farmville propaganda infested) slurpee may or may not have liquor in it edition”
New Scientists says: “Post-mortems of binge-drinking adolescent monkeys have produced the best evidence yet that heavy drinking at an early age can do lasting damage to the brain.
The worst damage was to stem cells destined to become neurons in the hippocampus, the brain area responsible for memory and spatial awareness.”
Going on to say: “The bingeing monkeys had 50 to 90 per cent fewer stem cells in their hippocampus compared with the controls. “We saw a profound decrease in vital cells,” Mandyam says.”
Happy Birthday, LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!

Program that converts Flash to Javascript in real-time for iPad
(Firstly, LOL if you thought this was about comic books) So Chris Smoak has written a script that essentially allows Flash to work in-browser on non-flash supporting hardware. Explained as:
“It runs entirely in the browser, reads in SWF binaries, unzips them (in native JS), extracts images and embedded audio and turns them in to base64 encoded data:uris, then stitches the vector graphics back together as animated SVG.”
What I think is neat about this is that Apple might have actually proved its worth as far as shaping the internet goes. Because here’s how I’m now thinking about this. Artists always talk about ingenuity through restriction. It’s largely why racy broadcast TV is usually better than racy cable TV (mostly), well the same might be applied to putting restrictions on their devices. Sure you can’t use porn apps but what their slightly fascist approach has done is point programmers in a direction to start cleaning up the many problems with flash.
Because it has a lot problems.

Cool science thing you should reading of the week:
io9’s Ask A Physicist — “Is long distance space travel ever going to be possible?”
“If you run the numbers, the entire trip takes only about 11 years, 2 months, 22.3 days, give or take. I don’t know about you, but I was pleasantly surprised at how short this is. After all, you’ve traveled a total of 8 light years in just a little over 11 years and the whole time you’ve got your artificial gravity going. Not bad.
It gets even better. Remember that throughout your trip you’re traveling at close to the speed of light, which means that time, travels slower for you than for the good folks back home. You only experience 6 years, 11 months, and 2.5 days. You’ve gone 8 light years in what seems (to you) to be less than 8 years. This does not mean that you’ve broken the speed of light barrier, by the way. Just as your clock slows down, you also see lengths around you shortened. Throughout your trip, Proxima Centauri seemed closer than it would have otherwise.”

Tattoos could help diabetics track their blood sugar
“The MIT researchers are looking to develop monitoring technology that is both more accurate and allows for constant monitoring. To that end, they are cooking up a nanoparticle “ink” that detects glucose in blood.
The technology behind the MIT sensor, described in a December 2009 issue of ACS Nano, is fundamentally different from existing sensors, says Strano. The sensor is based on carbon nanotubes wrapped in a polymer that is sensitive to glucose concentrations. When this sensor encounters glucose, the nanotubes fluoresce, which can be detected by shining near-infrared light on them. Measuring the amount of fluorescence reveals the concentration of glucose.”
Diabetes tattoos are fucking so cool. I want a tattoo that measures my devil-may-care-attitude.

Bill Nye explains how ‘top kill’ works, and suddenly, the BP oil spill seems like it was worth the effort. I would watch this man talk about what he ate for breakfast.

Jump to 1:30 for the good stuff.”

I like that Bill Nye has in recent years become more and more like the go to science guy for news stations. I like this because

  1. he knows what he’s talking about
  2. he explains it incredibly well
  3. and he always looks really fucking fed up with the fact he’s on CNN

Brain things!

cbrookstyle:

synesthesia is an unbelievable disorder.

Yeah, I never thought I had it until a couple years ago I was trying to write music with a friend and I kept using colors to explain what I wanted. I also do the same thing with words, like certain vowel sounds or constant sounds just seem to make different colors in my brain. As I’ve gotten mildly better at playing music the color thing has slipped away a bit but I still do think of music in color. For instance:

  • New Found Glory’s “All Downhill From Here” = A deep purple with touches of black
  • The Mighty Mighty Bosstones “The Impression That I Get” = White/grey/black/silver
  • Yeasayer’s “Ambling Amp” = This swirls of shades of reds and pinks and purples

I kinda like that though.
